What are the benefits of the maquiladoras system? What are the problems? Is it good or bad for the workers? What is NAFTA’s role?

I posted a list of helpful web sites for your adopted country project. I also re-posted the part of the Aids activity that we had way back in February that you must include in your adopted country project. Hopefully, most of you did it already--but just in case, I posted it again.

Happy studying!!Mrs. Carley
Friday, April 25, 2008
Remember to include this in your project!
This was part of the work we did from Unit 2 - Population
AIDS Investigation, Part II
How is AIDS affecting your adopted country?
Using information from the following websites investigate AIDS in your adopted country.
2004 Report on the Global Aids Epidemic, Chapter 2: "A Global Overview of the AIDS Epidemic"
www.unaids.org/bangkok2004/GAR2004_html/GAR2004_03_en.htm#TopOfPage
"Epidemiological Fact Sheets by Country" www.who.int/globalAtlas/predefinedreports/EFS2004/index.asp
Using the information from the reports above, develop an AIDS profile for your adopted country. You can format this profile any way you want to. This profile should be included in your adopted country notebook under the Population Unit.
Include a map, if available, showing the spread of the disease or any other visuals you can find.
Some questions you should try to answer are:
What is the occurrence of AIDS in the country?
Which population groups are most affected? (men, women, children?)
How is the disease most commonly spread?
What is being done to combat the disease and to prevent it’s spread?
Extra: You may want to list other infectious diseases that are ravaging your country.

Oh No--Break Almost Over!!

Did any of you catch AI Gives Back? They showcased several of the issues we've been learning about in AP Human Geo. If you didn't see the show, you can find lots of video about it almost anywhere on the Internet. As Randy Jackson Says, "Check it out!"
In answer to a question about demographic info--first of all why not look up demographic? But secondly, demographic info is all the statistics we've been analyzing which tell us about countries. For instance, GDP per capita, life expectancy, total fertility rate--all that 'stuff' is demographic information. So the country profile should include basic demographic information. Then as you go through each unit there will certain demographics which pertain to that unit in particular.
I'm so glad that some of you are working on your project!
And how exciting to have new little kittens to play with! Congratulations!
Enjoy your week-end!
See you soon.

Resources for Comparative Religion Project
Newspaper websites such as
- New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, or any other newspaper from a major U.S. city… just search the city name with “official newspaper”.
International newspaper websites, these are GREAT for researching WORLD religions… do not limit yourself to U.S. newspapers. Some ideas are listed below, but again you can just do a search with the world city name and “official newspaper”. Most of these will give you an English option once you get there. Some good ones to try include…
http://www.mumbainews.net/ (on the far left they list links for all of the major newspapers in India)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ (London, United Kingdom)http://www.egyptdailynews.com/ (Cairo, Egypt) and also http://www.egypttoday.com/
http://www.jpost.com/ (Jerusalem, Israel)http://news.bbc.co.uk/ (British Broadcasting Corporation… leader in world news)
Periodicals and Books - Upfront
- National Geographic
- Encyclopedia of World Religions and other Media Center resources
Miscellaneous Websites…
www.giftedcenter.com (Pre-AP and Comparative Religion Links)
http://jbe.la.psu.edu/courses/worldreligions/
DO NOT USE…
- Wikipedia
- Google News
- Yahoo News
- CNN, Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC (these are good sources at times, but not for this project)
Comparative Religion Project Instructions

Cooperative Group Activity
Objective: to compare two major religions of the world in various aspects and to evaluate their impact on regional and world culture
EQ: How does religion impact culture both globally and locally?
Procedure: Cooperative groups of 3 – 4 students will be assigned two major religions to compare and contrast. Using the information from the textbook, Chapter 6, students will gather information according to the areas listed below. Each student in the group will be responsible for presenting the information he has researched. The oral presentation must be accompanied by visuals, photographs, maps, etc. contained in a single power point presentation.
Requirements: contained in a three-pronged folder
Task sheet – detailed and specific, tasks assigned according to the areas of research listed below
Power point of VISUALS on a flash drive including:
A title slide/by line
A minimum of one interactive slide – get the class involved
Works cited: MLA style, minimum of six sources including two print
sources, one US news source, one foreign new source
Typed script for each area to accompany power point
Three higher level multiple choice questions (per group) with 5 descriptors handed in the day before project presentations.
Areas of research for each religion: see your book for further explanation
(see teacher blogs and web site list on student drive for resources)
Origins & diffusion (map) see p. 194 – 201 – include history of religion
Basic beliefs/tenants of the religion
Calendar see. P. 205 – 207 (holidays, festivals, etc.)
Organization of space see p. 207 - 212
Places of worship
Sacred space (burials, settlements, place names)
Administration of space
Conflicts see p. 212 – 221 (include both historical and current conflicts)
Religion vs. politics/government
Religion vs. religion
Conflicts between different groups within each religion
Additional suggestions:
1) Remember, you are comparing and contrasting the two religions in several different areas. You must integrate your presentation. In other words, don’t have ten slides about one religion and then ten slides about the other. Draw conclusions and comparisons and evaluations about the interaction and impact of the two religions as you present the information. This is NOT a “grocery list”, but a visual essay with a thesis!!
2) Most of the power point should be visual. You will teach the content through the presentation of your script. DO NOT overload the slides with written information. Keep us interested with visuals.
3) Each person in the group must make an oral presentation of their research and is responsible for creating slides for their section of the research. All slides must be put into one power point.
4) Begin your research by reading and taking notes from your text. Your text provides the frame work for your research and presentation.
Tentative schedule:
Wednesday 2/27 – plan, text reading/note taking
Thursday & Friday – 2/28, 2/29 – research days (class/computer lab)
Additional class time – To be announced
Presentation Day – Tuesday, March 11
Attention!!
For those of you who missed this announcement I made Monday, the deadline for the culture journal has been extended to Tuesday, March 4th. Several students have been ill so I'm allowing some extra time to do this. To reward those who have diligently worked to have the journal ready by tomorrow, you will receive bonus points for handing it in on Thursday. Because of the extension, any journals handed in late will only receive partial credit. Please make sure you proofread your journal and follow ALL instructions. It should be organized and easy to read, neat and attractively presented. I'm looking forward to reading about the places you've observed. You should have read and taken notes on chpts. 4& 5 by now. Tomorrow we will begin chapter 6 by starting on our comparative religion project. Remember, we will not have a Unit Test on these four culture chapters, but instead you will be assessed through projects and daily class activities. It is important to be here and to stay "on top of" your assignments.
I hope you enjoyed the "slang" activity today.
See you tomorrow.
