Investigating Maquiladoras and NAFTA

Part I – Read both case studies in Chapter 11. (p. 366 & p. 393), also the

section on Latin America on p. 388. After reading answer the following:

What are the benefits of the maquiladoras system? What are the problems? Is it good or bad for the workers? What is NAFTA’s role?

Part II – Go to the textbook website--8th edition – access from gifted center or use this link: http://wps.prenhall.com/esm_rubenstein_humangeo_8/20/5325/1363408.cw/index.html

Using the links from the Reviewing Concepts question and question #3 in Critical Thinking, further explore and gather information about the issues surrounding the maquiladoras system.

You may also want to do the Geo search on maquiladoras.

Part III – Using your findings, write an opinion essay backed up with solid information about one or more issues identified in the case studies from the textbook. Your essay should be 2 – 3 paragraphs. You will share these in class tomorrow.

Calling All Unit 5 FRQ's!!!

I'm going through the FRQ re-writes and see that several of you never handed them in which means I have no FRQ's for you. Please turn in either the re-writes or the originals or I will have to give you a zero for the Unit 5 FRQ's.

Saturday Check-up

I posted a list of helpful web sites for your adopted country project. I also re-posted the part of the Aids activity that we had way back in February that you must include in your adopted country project. Hopefully, most of you did it already--but just in case, I posted it again.

Looking Ahead:
  • Adopted Country Project - due Wednesday,May 14th
National AP Exam - Friday, May 16th
Parallel Reading Project - Monday, May 19th
  • April 28 - May 2nd: Unit 6, chpt. 11 & 12
  • May 5 - May 9: Unit 7, chpt. 13
  • May 12 - 15: practice AP tests & review
  • Final exams: Thursday, Friday, May 22,23

There is a lot going on, so you can't let even one week-end go by without getting some work done. The more you do now, the happier you will be later. And just think--in five weeks you will have finished your first year of high school!!

Happy studying!!

Remember to include this in your project!

This was part of the work we did from Unit 2 - Population

AIDS Investigation, Part II

How is AIDS affecting your adopted country?

Using information from the following websites investigate AIDS in your adopted country.

2004 Report on the Global Aids Epidemic, Chapter 2: "A Global Overview of the AIDS Epidemic"
www.unaids.org/bangkok2004/GAR2004_html/GAR2004_03_en.htm#TopOfPage

"Epidemiological Fact Sheets by Country" www.who.int/globalAtlas/predefinedreports/EFS2004/index.asp

Using the information from the reports above, develop an AIDS profile for your adopted country. You can format this profile any way you want to. This profile should be included in your adopted country notebook under the Population Unit.

  • Include a map, if available, showing the spread of the disease or any other visuals you can find.

  • Some questions you should try to answer are:

  • What is the occurrence of AIDS in the country?

  • Which population groups are most affected? (men, women, children?)

  • How is the disease most commonly spread?

  • What is being done to combat the disease and to prevent it’s spread?

Extra: You may want to list other infectious diseases that are ravaging your country.

Remember to go to the grocery store!

Remember that Activity #2 -- field research at the grocery store--
is due on Monday. If you lost the written assignment that I gave out in class, just go to the Kuby web site, chapter 8, and do activity 2. Follow the directions!
I learned some amazing things about the UN at the conference on Friday. Plus I got some ideas for lessons and even a new club at Sprayberry. I'll tell you about it on Monday!
Have fun at the store!!

Tomorrow

Tomorrow I will be attending a conference on how to teach the UN. I know it might sound boring to you, but I'm excited about learning some new ways to bring globalization to you! Anyway, I expect all of you to be on your best behavior. You will be starting an activity on coffee agriculture in class tomorrow which we will finish on Monday. Then you will be watching a video,

"China Revs Up".

I will check all the Kuby work including the maps on Monday. Also remember that FRQ re-writes are due Monday.

This is a short Unit, only chapter 10 so we will be having a test on Tuesday! Get ready.

For those of you who are interested in the Human Footprint you can watch video on it here:

Have a good Friday!

Bring Back the Kuby Books!!

Please bring back the Kuby books. We were missing at least 10 books today. So if you have a book at home and those of you that took one home today, please remember to bring it back so someone else can use it! We will have some time in class tomorrow to finish the guided reading. We will also go to the lab to do Activity 1 in chapter 8. Make sure that you look at activity 2 so that you know what to look for at the grocery store. You should also be reading and taking notes on chpt. 10 in the Rubenstein text.

May the 'farm' be with you!

Sunday Reminders

So here are a few things to remember:
*If you don't want to keep your orginal test score for Unit 4, you need to re-do the test at home and tomorrow you will have 10 minutes to fill out a new scantron. I will not accept any late re-tests.
*Tomorrow, we will also peer edit the Unit 4 FRQ's.
* We begin Unit 5 on Agriculture--chpt. 10.
I hope you've noticed the renewed concern around the world about the global food supply. Check it out in the news!
*Report cards will go home this week! Check I-Parent for missing assignments. I had to type 'not handed in' too many times!
See you tomorrow!!

Oh No--Break Almost Over!!

Did any of you catch AI Gives Back? They showcased several of the issues we've been learning about in AP Human Geo. If you didn't see the show, you can find lots of video about it almost anywhere on the Internet. As Randy Jackson Says, "Check it out!"

In answer to a question about demographic info--first of all why not look up demographic? But secondly, demographic info is all the statistics we've been analyzing which tell us about countries. For instance, GDP per capita, life expectancy, total fertility rate--all that 'stuff' is demographic information. So the country profile should include basic demographic information. Then as you go through each unit there will certain demographics which pertain to that unit in particular.

I'm so glad that some of you are working on your project!

And how exciting to have new little kittens to play with! Congratulations!

Enjoy your week-end!

See you soon.

Taking a Break??

I posted an earlier version of the guidelines for the adopted country project. It isn't exactly the one you have, but the basics are the same. Also, the formatting was impossible to copy so don't pay any attention to the larger fonts--it doesn't mean anything.
I hope you enjoyed not having to get up early today. I sure did!
Happy break!
