Comparative Religions Project
Cooperative Group Activity
Objective: to compare two major religions of the world in various aspects and to evaluate their impact on regional and world culture
EQ: How does religion impact culture both globally and locally?
Procedure: Cooperative groups of 3 – 4 students will be assigned two major religions to compare and contrast. Using the information from the textbook, Chapter 6, students will gather information according to the areas listed below. Each student in the group will be responsible for presenting the information he has researched. The oral presentation must be accompanied by visuals, photographs, maps, etc. contained in a single power point presentation.
Requirements: contained in a three-pronged folder
Task sheet – detailed and specific, tasks assigned according to the areas of research listed below
Power point of VISUALS on a flash drive including:
A title slide/by line
A minimum of one interactive slide – get the class involved
Works cited: MLA style, minimum of six sources including two print
sources, one US news source, one foreign new source
Typed script for each area to accompany power point
Three higher level multiple choice questions (per group) with 5 descriptors handed in the day before project presentations.
Areas of research for each religion: see your book for further explanation
(see teacher blogs and web site list on student drive for resources)
Origins & diffusion (map) see p. 194 – 201 – include history of religion
Basic beliefs/tenants of the religion
Calendar see. P. 205 – 207 (holidays, festivals, etc.)
Organization of space see p. 207 - 212
Places of worship
Sacred space (burials, settlements, place names)
Administration of space
Conflicts see p. 212 – 221 (include both historical and current conflicts)
Religion vs. politics/government
Religion vs. religion
Conflicts between different groups within each religion
Additional suggestions:
1) Remember, you are comparing and contrasting the two religions in several different areas. You must integrate your presentation. In other words, don’t have ten slides about one religion and then ten slides about the other. Draw conclusions and comparisons and evaluations about the interaction and impact of the two religions as you present the information. This is NOT a “grocery list”, but a visual essay with a thesis!!
2) Most of the power point should be visual. You will teach the content through the presentation of your script. DO NOT overload the slides with written information. Keep us interested with visuals.
3) Each person in the group must make an oral presentation of their research and is responsible for creating slides for their section of the research. All slides must be put into one power point.
4) Begin your research by reading and taking notes from your text. Your text provides the frame work for your research and presentation.
Tentative schedule:
Wednesday 2/27 – plan, text reading/note taking
Thursday & Friday – 2/28, 2/29 – research days (class/computer lab)
Additional class time – To be announced
Presentation Day – Tuesday, March 11
