Resources for Comparative Religion Project

Textbook and textbook website (see previous blog post for instructions on accessing both 8th & 9th edition sites). Look at the information in both Chapters 6 and 7
Newspaper websites such as

  • CNN, Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC (these are good sources at times, but not for this project)

Comparative Religion Project Instructions

Comparative Religions Project
Cooperative Group Activity

Objective: to compare two major religions of the world in various aspects and to evaluate their impact on regional and world culture
EQ: How does religion impact culture both globally and locally?

Procedure: Cooperative groups of 3 – 4 students will be assigned two major religions to compare and contrast. Using the information from the textbook, Chapter 6, students will gather information according to the areas listed below. Each student in the group will be responsible for presenting the information he has researched. The oral presentation must be accompanied by visuals, photographs, maps, etc. contained in a single power point presentation.

Requirements: contained in a three-pronged folder
 Task sheet – detailed and specific, tasks assigned according to the areas of research listed below
 Power point of VISUALS on a flash drive including:
A title slide/by line
A minimum of one interactive slide – get the class involved
Works cited: MLA style, minimum of six sources including two print
sources, one US news source, one foreign new source
 Typed script for each area to accompany power point
 Three higher level multiple choice questions (per group) with 5 descriptors handed in the day before project presentations.

Areas of research for each religion: see your book for further explanation
(see teacher blogs and web site list on student drive for resources)
 Origins & diffusion (map) see p. 194 – 201 – include history of religion
 Basic beliefs/tenants of the religion
 Calendar see. P. 205 – 207 (holidays, festivals, etc.)
 Organization of space see p. 207 - 212
Places of worship
Sacred space (burials, settlements, place names)
Administration of space
 Conflicts see p. 212 – 221 (include both historical and current conflicts)
Religion vs. politics/government
Religion vs. religion
Conflicts between different groups within each religion

Additional suggestions:
1) Remember, you are comparing and contrasting the two religions in several different areas. You must integrate your presentation. In other words, don’t have ten slides about one religion and then ten slides about the other. Draw conclusions and comparisons and evaluations about the interaction and impact of the two religions as you present the information. This is NOT a “grocery list”, but a visual essay with a thesis!!
2) Most of the power point should be visual. You will teach the content through the presentation of your script. DO NOT overload the slides with written information. Keep us interested with visuals.
3) Each person in the group must make an oral presentation of their research and is responsible for creating slides for their section of the research. All slides must be put into one power point.
4) Begin your research by reading and taking notes from your text. Your text provides the frame work for your research and presentation.

Tentative schedule:
 Wednesday 2/27 – plan, text reading/note taking
 Thursday & Friday – 2/28, 2/29 – research days (class/computer lab)
 Additional class time – To be announced
 Presentation Day – Tuesday, March 11

Attention!!

For those of you who missed this announcement I made Monday, the deadline for the culture journal has been extended to Tuesday, March 4th. Several students have been ill so I'm allowing some extra time to do this. To reward those who have diligently worked to have the journal ready by tomorrow, you will receive bonus points for handing it in on Thursday. Because of the extension, any journals handed in late will only receive partial credit. Please make sure you proofread your journal and follow ALL instructions. It should be organized and easy to read, neat and attractively presented. I'm looking forward to reading about the places you've observed.
You should have read and taken notes on chpts. 4& 5 by now. Tomorrow we will begin chapter 6 by starting on our comparative religion project. Remember, we will not have a Unit Test on these four culture chapters, but instead you will be assessed through projects and daily class activities. It is important to be here and to stay "on top of" your assignments.
I hope you enjoyed the "slang" activity today.
See you tomorrow.

  • AP contract and $

  • chpt. 4 notes for those who need to show competancy in Cornell Notes

Culture Journal

Here is a copy of the culture journal project:
Culture Journal
Due Date: Thursday, February 28th
200 points possible

Objective: To become culturally observant of common, everyday places and events and to distinguish between folk and pop culture.

Materials: spiral notebook, pencils

Directions: For the next two weeks, write down observations, draw pictures, sketch maps, etc. of places within the sphere where you live, work, play, go to school, shop, etc.

Requirements:
Ø Written and sketched observations of 10 different places contained in a spiral notebook
* one must be your neighborhood
* one must be a mall or other shopping area
* one must be a fast food restaurant
* one must be an entertainment area (theater, bowling alley, sporting event, work out facility, etc.)
* the other six places are your choice
Ø Each entry must be dated and identified as to type of place and location.
Ø Each entry must indicate the time of observation, including starting time, finishing time, and duration.
Ø Each entry should include a sketch of the place(s) observed. Photos may be substituted for drawings if preferred.
Ø Each entry should include a summary/reflection of the experience highlighting the most interesting observations. The reflection should include comments on elements of both folk and pop culture observed at the particular place.

To qualify for a B grade, you must meet all the requirements and spend at least 10 minutes at each place and list 10 observations for each place. Observations should be varied.

Suggestions for places to observe: parks, bookstores, Wal-Mart, restaurants, churches, recreation areas, dry cleaners, Dr. or Dentist offices, shopping areas, grocery stores, schools, bus stops, museums, town squares, pet stores, phone stores, post office, parking lots, cemeteries, Target, Home Depot…..the list is endless!!

Things to watch for: flow of customers in and out, ages of people, clothing style, transportation, communication, activities, advertising, architecture, colors, natural or man-made features, interactions among people, greetings, social behavior, placement of facilities, relative location, languages spoken, evidence of folk or pop culture, foods eaten, manners, tools or technology used…..everything you see, smell, hear, taste, touch.

Hint: Take your notebook everywhere! You never know when a routine trip may turn out to be a cultural observation opportunity!

Things To Do Over the Long Week-end

Use this extra time to get caught up with your adopted country project, read in your parallel reading book, and get a good start on your culture journal. You could probably do most of the culture journal over these four days. Be sure to read over the directions and get going!! It's really fun once you get started. In addition to sketching or taking pictures of the places you observe, it would be a good idea to pick up 'momentos' of your visit such as a napkin from a fast food restauant, a menu, a ticket stub, etc. Just make sure that what you take is free and available. Please be on your best behavior and don't bother people--you can observe without being obtrusive!
Looking Ahead:
Wednesday-test corrections due, also you should have chpt. 4 read by then
Folk culture-Who are the Amish?
Thursday-finish chpt. 4, begin chpt. 5 on Language
Friday-continue Language (probably lab time)
Enjoy your extra time!
