Welcome to AP Human Geography!
A variety of learning strategies will be used including lecture, discussion, video, group work, independent study, research, labs, field studies, and portfolio assessments. Critical and creative writing, reading, and thinking skills will be emphasized. It is expected that all students will participate in the National AP Exam.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
1. Required supplies:
Ø 3-ring binder/paper/dividers
Ø blue or black pens, pencils
Ø textbooks: An Introduction to Human Geography: the Cultural Landscape and Human Geography In Action
Ø colored pencils
Ø project materials as needed (markers, glue sticks, poster board, etc.)
Ø word processing and Internet access
Ø parallel reading book as chosen by student from teacher approved list
2. Assignments and makeup work:
Ø It is your responsibility to keep up with assignments and due dates. Check the white board daily.
Ø Print your first and last name, period, and assignment title in the upper right hand corner of assignments.
Ø Assignments must be ready to turn in upon entering the classroom. Place finished work in the gray basket.
Ø Late work may be accepted with a letter grade penalty for each day late. After three days, half credit may be earned at the discretion of the instructor. Final deadlines for accepting assignments may be imposed at any time. Point penalties will be awarded according to the point value of the assignment. A completed late work form must be attached to the late assignment. This applies for make-up work as well.
Ø It is your responsibility to make up any class work, quizzes or tests missed because of excused absences. You have 5 school days to make up work upon your return to class unless other arrangements have been made. Long term assignments are due on the day of your return.
Ø Field trips and extracurricular activities are not excuses for late work or incomplete work.
Ø It is expected that students will complete all major tests and projects. No extra credit will be given.
CLASS RULES/PROCEDURES
ü Good manners, appropriate language, and a respectful attitude towards others is expected. Class discussion rules will be followed. ONLY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WILL BE WELCOME IN MY CLASSROOM!!
ü Cell phones, portable CD players, etc. will not be allowed in the classroom as per school policy.
ü Students must have a pass to leave the classroom and must sign the emergency log. Bathroom trips should be kept to the minimum and should never interrupt instruction or testing. GOING TO THE VENDING MACHINES DURING CLASS TIME WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.
ü Students will sign an honor code affirming their understanding of class and school policies.
ü Extra help and review sessions will be available before or after school by appointment.
ü Snacks and drinks including water will be allowed at the teacher’s discretion.
**Please be familiar with the student handbook. All classroom procedures and policies are subject to the handbook rules.
AP Human Geography Course Syllabus
Purpose: ”The purpose of the AP course in Human Geography is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice.” (AP Central)
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the AP Human Geography course, the student should be able to:
Ø Use and think about maps and spatial data
Ø Understand and interpret the implications of associations among phenomena in places
Ø Recognize and interpret at different scales the relationships among patterns and processes
Ø Define regions and evaluate the regionalization process
Ø Characterize and analyze changing interconnections among places
